This course is designed for those who want to work in career education, career guidance and career counselling.

The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) has endorsed the Graduate Certificate of Career Development delivered by James Cook University as meeting the Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners.

This course can also be completed in conjunction with the Master of Guidance and Counselling.

3 subjects successfully completed to earn 12 credits.

Course Structure

3 trimesters per year

Study Program

Students are required to complete 3 core subjects.

Core subjects

• Foundations of Counselling Theory
• Career Development Portfolio *
• Career and Leisure Guidance and Counselling

*This subject consists of 6 credit points, equal to 2 subjects of 3 credit points each.

Students who have successfully completed a Master of Guidance and Counselling degree or postgraduate equivalent may apply for advanced standing for core subjects Foundations of Counselling Theory and Career and Leisure Guidance and Counselling.

Entry Requirements

• Successful completion of a recognised undergraduate degree
• Entry requirements for this course are consistent with the Pathways to Qualifications in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF level 8) Guidelines for Masters degrees. 

English Language Requirement

• IELTS 7.5 (no component lower than 7 in any of the four skills areas, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening)
• Students who have successfully completed 2 years of full-time study in English medium may satisfy the English language requirement on a case-by-case basis.

Attendance Requirements

As this is a professional training programme, students are required to attend all classes.

Career Outcome

Graduates will have a specialization in career development counselling.
