Certificate in English (Intermediate)

Course Description

The Certificate in English Programme is an intensive English language programme aimed at students who already possess a basic level of English Language but who need to develop their English language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) quickly and comprehensively. The entire programme (with 6 levels) is designed to take students from the Foundation grasp of English through to the Advanced proficient level of fluency. 

It follows a communicative approach to learning English which develops confidence and understanding while at the same time is fun and rewarding. The syllabus contains many ‘real world’ situations and examples that are relevant to students in the modern world. At the same time there is still emphasis on the importance of accuracy in English use.

Programme Objective

At the end of the Certificate in English (Intermediate) programme, students should be able to:

  • Further their knowledge of English grammar, learning new tenses and structures, and have a good knowledge of all areas of the English form.
  • Gain more vocabulary and phrases for various aspects of life and be exposed to the use of Business English.

Examinations & Assessment

Classes may take a variety of forms including class participation, debates, report and essay writings, oral presentations, and listening exercises. Take home work may also be allocated to students.

Students are required to pass the overall assessment in order to be granted a passing grade for the programme. A student who fails the final examination will take the supplementary examination. However, a supplementary examination fee applies.

Should the student fail the supplementary examination, he or she is required to repeat the programme. To repeat a failed programme, a student must attend classes and pay a re-module course fee before he/she is considered eligible to take the examinations. .

All students are required to fulfil the attendance requirement of at least 90% (international students) and 75% (local students) for each module before they are considered eligible to take the end-of-semester examinations.

Award of Certificate

Students who have completed all necessary course works, successfully passed all required modules and met all financial obligations to the Institute shall be awarded the Certificate in English (Intermediate).

Programme Structure & Curriculum

The Certificate in English (Intermediate) programme is a 2-month full-time programme, with a total of 120 contact hours. 

Classes are usually held daily (Monday to Friday) either from 9.30am to 1.30pm, or from 2.00pm – 6.00pm.
