Programme Objectives

• The MSc Tourism and Hospitality programme has been designed to facilitate a combination of real-world experience and critical reflection through fieldwork and classroom-based activities.
• The programme applies a social scientific approach to both tourism and hospitality studies through a focus on the contexts of globalisation,commercialisation and consumption.
• A particular strength of the programme is the consideration of the linkages between the travel, tourism and hospitality industries in relation to organisation and management, as well as in providing satisfactory experiences to consumers.

Career Opportunities

Past students from University of Sunderland tourism programmes have gone on to  a range of management careers including attractions, museums and destination marketing.

Students may also choose to set up a tourist or hospitality business or go to research and lecturing.

Module Descriptions

International Tourism Development

Upon successful completion of this module, students will have demonstrated:

• A critical understanding of the key concepts and theories associated with international tourism development;
• A critical awareness of the roles played by the various stakeholders in the international tourism development process
• The ability to critically appraise the processes and practices of international tourism development
• The ability to assess the policies and strategies of international tourism organizations
• The ability to critically evaluate of the implementation of tourism development policies and strategies

Hospitality Management Studies

Upon successful completion of this module, students will have demonstrated:

• An advanced knowledge of the operation of the hospitality industry
• A knowledge of the characteristics of hospitality production and consumption
• A knowledge of the structure, components and evolution of hospitality supply and demand
• Critically appraise hospitality development and management case-studies

Critical Tourism Theory and Methods

Upon successful completion of this module, students will have demonstrated:

• Expert knowledge and a critical understanding of qualitative and quantitative methodological techniques in tourism analysis
• A critical awareness of new theoretical developments in tourism research
• The ability to plan a tourism research proposal
